Out On The Lakeshore has been the host of the Holland PRIDE Celebration since opening our doors in 2016. In fact, the celebration’s growth is in-part what prompted local LGBTQ+ leaders to create an LGBTQ+ community center. Thus, Out On The Lakeshore was born.
Like most other Pride festivals throughout the country, Out On The Lakeshore’s team had to make the difficult decision to cancel the main celebration in the park this year. We did recognize however that we can’t cancel the reason why we celebrate. We must remember those that came before us, and continue to celebrate who we are as LGBTQ+ people, while also recognizing that the fight isn’t over.
With this in mind, we decided in lieu of postponing Holland PRIDE, we would reimage the celebration. We decided to turn the support back on those who have supported us. We’re recognizing local businesses and promote all that they are doing for the community, as they work to reopen to the public. Several downtown Holland businesses are even providing Pride specials to celebrate with us.
We recognize that many people crave reasons to get out and move, so we also established our first-ever “Run with Pride 5K” – a virtual run taking place June 21 – 27, purposefully ending the day that the original celebration in Centennial Park was planned. All proceeds will go directly to Out On The Lakeshore, allowing us to continue to provide programming for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
Speaking of our original Holland PRIDE celebration date, we decided that while we can’t have a large celebration, we also can’t ignore the day altogether. Keeping social distancing in mind, we’re holding an open house at the Out On The Lakeshore Community Center on June 27 from 12pm to 3pm. During the open house, we’ll enjoy music from DJ Keller, baked goods from Saunders Family Bakery, the Herman Miller photo booth, and more for the public to enjoy.
