Your Community Takes Centerstage as Civic Theatre Prepares for Milestone Centennial Season
For nearly a century, Grand Rapids has told its story not just through business growth or skyline changes, but through the people, creativity, and shared experiences that define who we are. At Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts, we see that story unfold every day—on stage, in classrooms, and across our community.
Founded in 1926, Civic Theatre has grown into one of the largest, most well-renowned community theatres in the nation, engaging tens ofthousands of people each year through performances, education, and volunteerism. But the impact of this Grand Rapids arts and culture pillar extends far beyond the curtain call.
Arts as Economic Engine
When we talk about economic development in Grand Rapids, we often focus on major infrastructure projects or new business investments. Those matter, and they are some of what makes our city so grand. Arts also matter. For community vibrancy and vitality. For interpersonal connection and growth. For personal expression and enlightenment. And for fueling the economic engine of the region, directly and indirectly.
Each season, Civic Theatre welcomes more than 60,000 patrons into our building in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids—and our goal is 100K for our upcoming Centennial Season. These audiences don’t just attend a show; they dine at local restaurants, pay for parking, hire babysitters, enhance the nightlife, shop at local retailers, and explore our city. The arts create a ripple effect that supports small businesses, drives foot traffic, and contributes to a vibrant downtown ecosystem. In a recent GVSU Economic Impact study showed over $300M of direct impact with nearly $1M in tax revenue generation…and that was just from a sample of organizations the arts sector.
Just as importantly, Civic Theatre helps attract and retain talent. In a competitive landscape, companies aren’t just selling jobs—they’re selling community. A thriving arts and culture scene signals that Grand Rapids is a place where people want to live, work, and raise families.
Building the Next Generation of Leaders
The impact of theatre extends well beyond entertainment. Through our School of Theatre Arts, we serve more than 1,800 students annually, providing hands-on education that builds confidence, collaboration, and communication skills.
These are not just “arts skills”—they are workforce skills that are desperately needed in every sector and function of our economy.
Employers consistently seek individuals who can think creatively, present ideas clearly, and work effectively in teams. Theatre education develops exactly these competencies, helping to prepare the next generation of leaders across industries—from healthcare and education to business and technology to engineering, construction and trades.
A True Community Platform
Civic Theatre is powered by people. Each year, hundreds of volunteers contribute tens of thousands of hours—on stage, backstage, in the lobby, and behind the scenes in the offices and around the buildings.
That level of engagement is more than operational—it’s transformational.
We bring together individuals from different neighborhoods, professions, and backgrounds to collaborate toward a shared goal. In a time when connection can feel increasingly fragmented, community theatre creates a rare and powerful space for belonging.
We are also committed to ensuring that theatre is accessible to all. Through initiatives like “Pick Your Price” performances, sensory-friendly shows, and ASL-interpreted productions, we are actively removing barriers so more members of our community can participate in and benefit from the arts.
Reflecting the Spirit of Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids is known for its collaborative spirit, entrepreneurial mindset, and commitment to community. Civic Theatre embodies those same values as a mirror of the Grand Rapids and West Michigan community.
We are a place where innovation meets tradition, where partnerships fuel growth, and where individuals come together to create something bigger than themselves. Our success—like that of our city—is built on relationships, generosity, and a shared belief in what’s possible.
As we approach our Centennial Season, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate this legacy while investing in the future.
