“Amway Stadium” Gets Green Light ✅

This morning, it was officially announced that the proposed Grand Rapids Soccer Stadium will be named Amway Stadium, honoring the Grand Rapids-based company that serves as the project’s lead donor.

The new name follows the Grand Rapids City Commission’s unanimous vote to approve several items. This important step moves this transformational project closer to goal and a spring groundbreaking date. The Kent County Commission voted 18-1 the previous week on the same items.

Thank you to both Commissions and staff for all of the work that goes into making catalytic public-private partnerships happen!

The City Commission also unanimously approved re-appointments of the four positions they directly ‘hire’: the City Manager, Clerk, Attorney and Treasurer.

  • As new members join the City Commission the insight, guidance and knowledge they will bring from their time of service is invaluable. Their reappointment helps ensure continuity in city operations, allowing them to implement longterm projects that enhance the quality of life for all residents.

The commission also had a public hearing on a proposal to transform the Fulton and Market parking lot along the Grand River into retail, office, apartments, condos and more! The site is formerly where Charley’s Crab was located and has unique development challenges.

  • The development is seeking a transformational brownfield plan approval from the City of Grand Rapids to recover eligible costs such as environmental remediation through tax increment financing.
  • Accompanying the three towers, the project would also improve public trails along the river’s edge and access to the river. The Commission will consider the request at their December 3rd meeting.
