Since taking on the role of Retail Retention & Attraction Specialist for the Grand Rapids Chamber, Richard App has consistently highlighted our identity as an active lifestyle city. So what has created this incredible, vibrant culture? Here are 6 things that have built up this connected and healthy community.
1. A City Designed for Movement
Grand Rapids is a safe, walkable community with a growing network of bike lanes. Bike racks are installed throughout business districts, and The Rapid, our public transit system, accommodates bicycles for seamless travel.
For downtown or nearby travel, we have the DASH (Downtown Area Shuttle). This free service loops through six business districts, passing parks, entertainment venues, libraries, restaurants, grocery stores, and more. DASH buses run early, late, and connect to other transit lines, offering incredible convenience.
Additional transportation options include electric scooters, e-bikes, and a car rental service—all affordable and accessible.
2. Parks, Green Spaces, and Urban Wellness
With 85 parks, Grand Rapids offers extensive trails, free fitness classes, and river access. Our parks are well-maintained, safe, and feature amenities like pickleball courts and two of Michigan’s top three disc golf courses.
The Mayor’s Greening Initiative recently surpassed a major milestone by planting over 10,000 trees, which not only enhance air quality and reduce urban heat but also promote mental well-being.
3. Sports, Festivals, and Culture
Grand Rapids draws athletes and enthusiasts year-round. In 2023 alone, over 175,000 athletes visited for events like the Grand Rapids Marathon, Beer City Pickleball Open, and Amway Riverbank Run (the largest 25K in the country). These events generate significant economic impact while celebrating fitness and community.
On the cultural side, we host over 40 cultural festivals, including ArtPrize (which attracts 750,000 visitors from across the globe) and the winter favorite World of Winter, which brought over 4.5 million visitors downtown in 2023. Neighborhood events like Eastown’s Street Fair and Creston After Dark elevate our city’s “cool factor.”
4. Support for Entrepreneurs
Grand Rapids is a city where businesses thrive. Entrepreneurs have access to free coaching, numerous resources, and a network of Entrepreneurial Support Organizations ready to help. My role, created in partnership with the City of Grand Rapids, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., and the Grand Rapids Chamber, is part of a broader commitment to ensuring businesses succeed here.
5. Sustainability
Sustainability is a cornerstone of Grand Rapids’ identity. Our curbside single-stream recycling program has been free for residents since 2010. We’re also on track to achieve a 50% reduction in net carbon emissions by 2030 and net-zero carbon by 2050, thanks to initiatives like the 2030 District, which helps businesses and institutions reduce energy and water usage and transportation-related emissions.
6. A Community That Thrives Together
One thing I love about Grand Rapids is the spirit of collaboration. If you want to make a difference, all you have to do is show up. Countless neighborhood groups, nonprofits, and city-led boards are eager for passionate individuals to help build a better community.
Grand Rapids is more than a place—it’s a mindset. By working together, we’re creating a city where everyone can grow, thrive, and make an impact.
