Dr. Sandra Upton Recipient of Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence

We are thrilled to announce Dr. Sandra Upton, Founder and Chief DEI Strategist of Upton Consulting Group, as the 2024 recipient of the Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence.

The Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker Award for Inclusive Excellence honors individuals in West Michigan who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Inspired by Dr. Booker’s legacy, the award celebrates those who create lasting change through innovative programs, community engagement, and advocacy for marginalized groups. Recipients exhibit an unwavering commitment to building inclusive cultures, championing policy changes, and providing mentorship to underrepresented individuals. Dr. Upton will be presented this award at the Diversity & Talent Summit on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

Dr. Sandra Upton is Founder and Chief DEI Strategist with Upton Consulting Group (UCG), an innovative team of strategists who work with DEI professionals and organizations around the globe. Using a research-based change management framework and culturally intelligent strategies, UCG supports organization’s efforts to create behaviors and systems that support diverse, equitable and inclusive work environments.

Prior to launching UCG. Dr. Upton was Vice President, Global Diversity Practice with the Cultural Intelligence Center and was responsible for providing strategic leadership and expertise on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) matters for numerous Fortune 500 companies and Ivy-League institutions across the world.

Through her consulting she has worked with organizations such as Amway, SpartanNash, Corewell Health, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Starbucks, LabCorp, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Kohls, McDonalds, Perrigo, Saks Fifth Avenue, Willis Towers Watson, Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT and University of Michigan, just to name a few. In sum, she has nearly thirty years of DEI experience consulting, coaching and training with businesses, educational institutions, governmental agencies and non-profits.

Dr. Upton is the author of the newly released book “Make It Last: A Roadmap and Practical Strategies for How to Do DEI Work.” She is a frequent speaker and has been featured on several podcasts across the globe. In 2023, she was selected as one of Crain’s Grand Rapids Business’ Notable Leaders in DEI.

Most significant, she is the proud wife of Robert Upton Jr. They have two amazing adult children, Alexis Atkins and Devin Upton.
